Lotus Flowers
Lotus Flower
The Lotus Flower has exquisite beauty and has special meaning. They are most popular in the countries of Egypt, Asia, and India. The Nile, in Egypt, has perhaps the most Lotus Flowers. However, they didn’t originate in Egypt as many people think.
The special meaning of the flower resides in how the plant grows. It starts out as a tiny seed in a muddy swamp. It is in a place you would think it would be very difficult to grow. The plant struggles and succeeds by following the sunlight. In due course, the plant will reach the water surface. When this occurs a beautiful flower is born.
This beautiful transformation is taken in a spiritual context. We as human beings will become beautiful as we follow the spiritual light. If you have gone through a hard time, the Lotus Flower may have significant meaning for you and help you to hold and do what’s right. If life is really tough, you may want to hang a picture of a Lotus Flower or plant one.
The lotus plant is one of the eight Buddhist symbols. It symbolized faithfulness.
How to Grow
The zones are 7, 8, and 9. Plant in full sun.
You will need a very damp soil for seed or rhizome plantings. Most Lotus Flowers are planted in ponds. When planting rhizomes be careful not to bury the two ends. Only bury the middle section by one inch and leave two inches on each end undisturbed.
If planting a tuber from the nursery, plant it under 4-6 inches of water. Only cover the middle area with soil; about one inch. Once the plant grows close to water surface, add more water. Pretend you are planting a water lily. It’s the same thing.
