Landscape Planning
Landscaping and Planning
Good landscaping requires the individual to really think about what they want to accomplish. If all fails, just hire a good designer.
Step 1- Measure the Yard
You can look at your blueprints, use a tape measure, or a measuring wheel. The wheel is the easiest, but you probably don’t have one. They are available for around $60.00.
Step 2- Draw on Graph Paper
We’re making the big assumption you don’t have AutoCAD or know how to use it. Buy some graph paper at an office supply store. Get as large a piece as possible because the larger you go the more details you can easily draw.
Step 3- Decide on Hardscape Items
Do you have a favorite statue? Are you putting in an arbor or trellis? These types of items should be picked out before plants and colors.
Step 4 – Pick out a Theme
The theme should ideally go with the area and your hardscape items. Themes should revolve around plants that go together naturally. For example, for a desert theme pick desert plants; not tropicals.
Step 5- Colors
Pick at least three colors for your theme with white being one of the colors. You should showcase the brighter flowers with smaller background and more tonal colors.
Step 6- Pick out Plants
Browse through magazines and books. Then go to some local nurseries to see what you like.
Step 7- Spacing
Make a chart of all the plants you like and how far apart they should be planted. This will help you immensely for the next step.
Step 8- Draw in the Design
If all goes well, you will have enough information to draw in the design. Use a pencil so that you can make necessary changes.
